Bob Trieber
Bob Trieber from National Fire Sprinkler Association spoke on Sprinkler
System Testing and Maintenance. Key points were the intent of the standard
and necessary checks and tests to be completed.
David Hoover from Forklift Training Systems spoke about Forklift Safety.
His "commonly violated rules" included excessive speed, hurried operation,
failure to look when backing, failure to wear required safety equipment
(seatbelts) and failure to complete pre shift checklists. He also addressed
the 1998 update of the OSHA standard pertaining to training and certification
of operators. This includes a combination of instruction, practical
training, and practical exercises by the trainee and requires and evaluation
at least every 3 years.
"Future of Loss Control"
Steve Nolan
Steve Nolan, Director of Loss Control, for State Farm Insurance spoke
about the "Future of Loss Control". His reasons for optimism included
added value provided by the loss control function, new risks that create
new opportunities, new technologies and enterprise risk management.
Transitional Work
Programs
Patricia Murphy
Patricia Murphy of Workers Choice Health Services spoke about Transitional
Work Programs. An attention getting statistic provided was, employees
off longer than 60 days only have a 50% chance of returning to work.
Transitional work can help reduce lost time days, reduce number of restricted
duty days and prevent claim reserve cost drivers.
Bob Titter from Ashland Inc presented on Combustible Dusts. His keys
to preventing combustible dust exposures are to 1) Identify any combustible
dust exposures 2) Install and properly maintain engineering controls
to manage any dust exposures, including dust collectors and ventilation
systems and 3) Develop and maintain proper housekeeping controls to
manage any fugitive dust accumulations, including hidden areas above
ceilings and on overhead building structural elements.
3 Overarching Goals
of the Division of State Fire Marshal
Michael P. Bell
Michael P. Bell, the Ohio State Fire Marshall, opened the second day
with a presentation about 3 overarching goals of the Division of State
Fire Marshal. 1) Everyone goes home 2) Accountability and 3) Outreach.
We finished with a discussion about how our job ties in with the fire
service and how we may be able to help each other out with information
sharing in the future.
Protect Aging Workers from
Occupational Injuries
Dr. Deborah Kearney
Dr. Deborah Kearney from Job Smart System used relevant statistics
and every day examples to illustrate how our aging workforce can be
a benefit and how to protect them from occupational injuries. As of
2008, the average age of workers in the United States is 45 years old.

Gary G. Miller
Gary G. Miller from the Cincinnati Red Cross Spoke about Disaster Preparedness.
Michael Mills of Liberty Mutual Insurance talked about Tower Cranes.
Different types of cranes, hazards and necessary inspections were covered.
Electrical Safety -
Focusing on Arch Flash and Arc blast
Paeder Lynch
Paeder Lynch of Mid City Electrical Construction spoke about Electrical
Safety and focused on Arch Flash and Arc blast, where they are normally
encountered and some techniques and PPE to help avoid injury.
Industrial Accident
Investigation and Reconstruction
Philip Hastings
Philip Hastings of Motorists Group/ Nationwide presented on Industrial
Accident Investigation and Reconstruction. This session covered the
key elements of the accident investigation process from the preparation
for, and then response to an accident. He covered collection tools,
equipment and materials needed to conduct the investigation, fact finding
techniques to use in the interview process, preservation of evidence,
all to identify the primary cause and document the details.
Paul Farrell, CEO of Safety First, talked about Fleet Safety and focused
on the ANSI Z15.1 standard. This voluntary standard applies to any business
regardless of size or classification and can be used to create or audit
fleet safety programs.
John Puskar from Combustion Safety Inc talked about Boilers. Many items
were covered including equipment safety, necessary inspections and checks,
frequency of inspections and some case studies on boiler explosions.
Behavior Based Safety
Brett Gillilan
Brett Gillilan from the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation gave an
enthusiastic presentation on behavior based safety. This topic not only
reaches to the core of why unsafe acts and conditions exist, but also
how to relate the skill of behavior based safety to your personal lives
and win bets with your spouse.
